The exploration of the characteristics of the 3 dimensions of space, how they play together when form takes on a gestural expression, volume, the beauty of the right proportions- these are the beginnings of my sculptures. It is not the 3-dimensional object placed in space which concerns me, but rather the revealing of space itself through sculpture. Quite often I develop a handsize maquette in clay or plaster from which I then execute an enlargement. But a good number of my sculptures develop directly out of a particular block or individual stone. This technique of direct carving allows me to create sculptures that are inherent to that specific piece of stone and therefore not duplicable. Stone is an unimaginably old material. Its density and weight are an expression of its age, and working in the spirit of this material means to relate to a long past and a far future.

To Capture the Process
by Bob Bagley

There are two things I discovered watching Lothar work that seem to stand out in this man-the sculptor.
One is his ability to visualize and extract such unique forms from the world around him- to merge that which he sees with that which he imagines. And then be able to find and shave this shape out of rock.
The second is his incredible love for the process. One cannot create great works in stone- or any other medium for that matter, out of mere love for the result. One must love the process. For the sculptor is a stone carver first and last and only does success, with his ability to transform that inner image to the real world, make him a creator of sculpture.
